Rethinking Music Ecosystems

Across four days of talks, panels, workshops, and discussions, Rethinking Music Ecosystems continues a pressing thread that began as part of Transfer 2019. This module brings together artists, organisers, academics, promoters, and listeners alike to speculate on what a more collaborative, interdependent music ecosystem might look like, and how we might work towards one. Day one looks at the unique obstacles that cultural journalism faces today, seeking possible ways forward. The second day considers challenges when it comes to making, creating, and sustaining spaces. From recorded music to touring, day three tackles formidable questions of what we in music can do in the face of the climate crisis. And lastly, day four considers how various projects make a difference in a wider cultural ecosystem. Rethinking Music Ecosystems facilitates and participates in a crucial conversation, attempting to re-imagine today’s music landscape and our places within it.

CTM's Transfer programme supports the festival’s vast musical scope. Transfer takes place at Kunstquartier Bethanien and other venues, and ties together the Discourse series of talks, panels, workshops and screenings; the collaborative MusicMakers Hacklab; several public networking events including the Research Networking Day created together with UdK, GMM, and Humboldt University; and the Interstitial Spaces exhibition.

Transfer is funded by Initiative Musik, Senate Department of Culture and Europe, and Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Government Agency for Civic Education).
