FriSounds both sludgy and hyperactive coalesce in DJ sets from Opium Hum. Afrodeutsche reinterprets her acclaimed releases with a new live A/V show in collaboration with Bhatoptics. Warsaw’s techno trailblazer Zamilska juggles winding rhythms over stuttering, caustic kicks. Giant Swan is notorious for their acerbic marriage of energised, aggressive dance music, quaking bass, and hypnotic electronic noise. MNNNKJDE is Mario de Vega and Hugo Esquinca, who present new work that traverses temporal disarray and intricate rhythmic patterns. Aquarian appears ahead of the release of his debut LP, The Snake That Eats Itself; his DJ sets venture through sinister breaks, feverish jungle, grimey drum and bass, and on through uncharted territory. Discwoman affiliate Akua is a Ghanaian-American DJ known for a boundary pushing sound, infusing old-school tracks and techniques with a vision for the dancefloors of the future.
Afrodeutsche, MNNNKJDE, and Aquarian are supported by SHAPE, which is cofunded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
Aquarian[CA/DE]
Aquarian makes raw, arresting music aimed squarely at the dancefloor. His take on hybrid, mutated strains of rave music is shaped by the sounds of London, Detroit, and Berlin. His debut full-length, titled The Snake That Eats Itself, is set for release this January on Bedouin. With Deapmash, he is AQXDM; the pair recently debuted on Houndstooth with new EP, Infrared.
Opium Hum[DE]
Opium Hum, aka Michail Stangl, builds his DJ sets using sombre, hazy drones and fantastical soundscapes permeated by deep and shifting rhythms, creating what can only be called a waking dream.
Afrodeutsche[UK]
Afrodeutsche is a British born Ghanaian-Russian-German composer, producer, and DJ based in Manchester. Her productions cross a wide range of styles including classical solo piano, techno, house, and electro.
MNNNKJDE[MX/DE]
A Traversal Act. An Overt Reaction. A Potential Adversity. A Viscose Pattern. A Sequential Disfigurement. An Indiscernible Cut. An Abrupt Spasm. A Vehement Apparition. A Continuous Contraction. A Tongue between Teeth.
Akua[US]
Akua is a Brooklyn-based DJ and part of the Discwoman collective. The Ghanaian American DJ has cultivated a boundary pushing sound that reflects her passion for research and recontextualisation, infusing old-school tracks and techniques with a vision for the dancefloors of the future.
Zamilska[PL]
Since debuting with acclaimed LP Untune in 2014, Zamilska has earned herself a formidable reputation in techno and beyond. The Polish industrial artist is known for juggling winding rhythms over stuttering, caustic kicks. In her live sets and productions, raw noise meets delicate melodies, haunting choirs, and monstrous bass.
Giant Swan[UK]
Punk techno stars Giant Swan have risen to notoriety thanks to their acerbic marriage of energised, aggressive dance music; quaking bass; and hypnotic electronic noise. Comprised of Harry Wright (aka Mun Sing) and Robin Stewart, the duo recently released their debut LP via their own imprint, Keck.
