WedThis dynamic and evolving concert interweaves different voices, minds and spheres of current sounds and practices from Southeast Asia.
Keiji Haino and Kazuhisa Uchihashi will share the stage with Senyawa’s Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi to engage in a multilogue that will shift between solo playing and collaborative performance in various constellations. All of the performers share an investment in the transformative powers of sound and an involvement in the practice of performance as an existential exploration of spirit, identity, and culture. Haino is a Tokyo-based noise-, improv-, and drone musician and guitarist whose long-standing, venerated career has navigated a wide array of styles and instrumentations. Uchihashi is a guitarist and free-improvisor. He is the founder of the band Altered States, the label Innocent Records, and the festival Beyond Innocence. As Senyawa, Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi embody the aural flavours of Javanese music while exploring the framework of experimental music practice, pushing the boundaries of both traditions.
Rully Shabara[ID]
As one half of Senyawa, vocalist Rully Shabara has become one of South Asia’s most recognisable faces in the underground and experimental music scene. Known for his dynamic, intense performances, which captivate audiences globally, Shabara’s onstage presence bridges contemporary metal with traditional Indonesian folk and various theatrical performance styles.
Kazuhisa Uchihashi[JP]
Osaka-born Kazuhisa Uchihashi is a guitarist, free-improviser and founder of the band Altered States, the label Zenbei Records, and the Beyond Innocence festival. Having mastered and navigated many musical styles from blues to jazz to free improvisation, he has expanded the potential of the electric guitar by using the instrument in new contexts and manipulating its sound with various effects.
Senyawa[ID]
Senyawa, the duo of Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi, uniquely manages to embody the aural flavours of Javanese music while exploring the framework of experimental music practice, pushing the boundaries of both traditions. In so doing, the music strikes a perfect balance between avant-garde influences and cultural heritage to create truly contemporary Indonesian music.
Keiji Haino[JP]
Keiji Haino, one of the most visionary and individual voices in the Japanese psychedelic, noise and improv underground, was born in Chiba and has lived in Tokyo for most of his life. His long-standing, venerated career has navigated a wide array of styles and instrumentations, but over the course of its many-sided trajectory has nevertheless consistently reflected a determined quest for transcendence, disassociation and spiritual self-knowledge through sound.
Wukir Suryadi[ID]
Hailing from Malang, in Eastern Java, and currently based in Yogyakarta, composer and instrument builder Wukir Suryadi fuses ancient Javanese tradition with contemporary music practice.
