Alien Agency: Experimental Encounters with Art in the Making is a new book that will be published by Chris Salter for the MIT Press in February 2015. In Alien Agency three stories of "art in the making" are told, examining works in which the materials of art – the "stuff of the world" – behave and perform in ways beyond the creator’s intent, becoming unknown, surprising, alien.

Alien Agency explores the broad question of How do new things emerge into the world and what do they do? As the first part of the book focuses on sound as vibrant matter through the work of renowned Berlin-based sonic artist and thinker Sam Auinger and NY based sound artist Bruce Odland (O+A), CTM is the first public platform to launch the book to the wider public. In particular, CTM’s 2015 theme of Un-Tune with its focus on the “affective and somatic effects of sounds and frequencies opens up possibilities of tuning and de-tuning the composite that interconnects body, matter, energy, and (musical) machines – and of exploring our perception” resonates strongly with Alien Agency’s potent mix exploring affect, perception and new forms of experience that come about in new techno-scientific-artistic-research-creation practices.
