TueThe "Delilah Too Voice Encoding System" installation (shown in the CTM 2015 Exhibition at Kunstraum Bethanien) employs a device more often associated with electronic music – the vocoder – returned to its original context as a medium of enciphered speech communication. Inspired by the media-archaeological methods of Friedrich Kittler, the phenomenological compositions of Alvin Lucier and DIY spirit of electronic arts pioneers such as Steina and Woody Vasulka, I will discuss the use of "obsolete" technology as a lens to view contemporary problems, and what the transformation of symbolic language to real sound phenomenon and back can tell us about ideas of privacy and exclusion vs community and inclusion.
