An aequa conversation facilitated by Sarah Joy Lynch and Will Lynch

Update 27.1.: This workshop is now FULL

Today's aspiring arts and culture journalists don't have it easy. There are fewer jobs available and less advertising money to go around. Video is replacing written content more and more over time. Social media has grown out of its role as a marketing channel to become a content contender in its own right.

But as the subjects reported by mainstream news channels become increasingly apocalyptic, the role of cultural journalism becomes more crucial than ever. Art, after all, is the great equalizer, and an excellent conduit to connect people and help us digest the woes of the world. While audiences look for art that can bolster them through rocky times, journalists spread and contextualize the political messages and personal experiences artists embed in their work, an invaluable tool in inspiring societal shifts.

In this interactive workshop, we invite journalists, critics, editors, photographers, and all readers of cultural media to join us for a candid discussion on themes such as:

  • The role of objectivity and the new ethics in journalism in an age of rising fascism
  • Closing the gap between freelance writers and the institutions that hire them
  • The role and risks of branded content and the need for innovation in media funding
  • Moving away from traditional publisher models towards social-focused content strategies (e.g. IGTV)
  • Social media as a professional obligation for journalists
  • Need for diversification of hired, published, and featured voices

Through this discussion, we hope to find answers and further cultivate a support system for an increasingly disparate community through knowledge sharing and conversation.

The event is free of charge, but requires pre-registration.
