Producer and songwriter Lafawndah has been releasing music since 2016, releasing her debut full length, Ancestor Boy, in 2019. Her music absorbs influences from her heritage, transforming it into a unique vision that defies categorisation.
Signed to Warp, Lafawndah released Tan in 2016, which was heralded as “the new pop” by Tiny Mix Tapes. This was followed by Le Renard Bleu, a collaboration with Midori Takada, and her first for current record label !K7.
Ancestor Boy was crafted with the aid of fellow travelers Nick Weiss, Aaron David Ross, and L-Vis 1990 (and also features guest appearances from the likes of GAIKA, Kelsey Lu, Bonnie Banane, Julie Byrne, and the inimitable Jon Hassell). Delivering a maximalism of detail, feeling, and ideas, the record was lauded by The Wire; “Forgoing any temptation to portray herself as an alluring curio, Lafawndah instead pushes a singular yet communal vision, processing a blessedly rich vein of cultural information and cutting edge influence.”
As well as producing solo music, Lafawndah has scored work for projects across fashion, art, and advertising, collaborating with the likes of Laure Prouvost (French Pavilion, Venice Biennale), Xavier Cha (Art Basel, Empty Gallery HK), and Jacolby Satterwhite (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art). The fashion world has embraced her for custom composition for adverts and runways, from Kenzo and Nowness to Chanel and Fendi.
