In light of growing attentiveness to issues of gender balance and diversity within music festival lineups, the point is often made that change needs to happen simultaneously on a structural and internal level in order for such balanced lineups to be more than provisional box-ticking or a strategy to guarantee funding. Often, questions of diversity and gender balance “behind the scenes,” i.e. among organisers and decision-makers, get overlooked. What is it like to be a female-identifying person curating events, booking artists, commissioning and writing articles, and fighting for funding for artists ?

Co-hosted and moderated by Kat Young, Christine Kakaire, and Elissa Stolman of the collective Salt + Sass, this event features several short presentations by women with pivotal roles as both decision-makers and performers in the music industry. They will share their experiences and emphasise the importance of mentorship. The event will also act as a platform for members of the public to start dialogues, exchange ideas, and cross-pollinate their own work. A closing discussion will focus on best practices for both organisers and artists.

Gilke Vanuytsel[BE]

Gilke Vanuytsel is a Brussels-based music promoter and curator.

Ruth Timmermans[BE]

A trained historian, Ruth Timmermans used to be a researcher on gender, trade-unions, and (pre-)colonialism at the University of Leuven (Belgium). With her passion for music, art, literature, and film, she became an editor at Gonzo (circus) magazine in 2000; an independent music and art magazine distributed in Belgium and The Netherlands that covers a broad range of current genres and contexts. She is the managing director at Gonzo Circus Publishing since 2004.

Pamela Schobess[DE]

Pamela Schobess studied communication sciences and has been running clubs in Berlin for almost 20 years. After she and her partner had to close the legendary Icon club in Prenzlauer Berg due to gentrification, they opened the club Gretchen in Kreuzberg.

Sarah Farina[DE]

Sarah Farina is known for sprinkling positivity and joy over the darkest bassy sounds. An innovative, skillful DJ, she’s the smiling antithesis of genre cliques and scene elitists. Her sets blend bass-heavy footwork and futuristic rhythms over fearless forays through R&B and UK funky.

Alexandra Bondi de Antoni[DE]

Alexandra Bondi de Antoni has been the editor-in-chief of i-D Germany since January 2015. She is in charge of editorial concept, video productions, and development of branded content and partnerships.

Christine Kakaire[AU/DE]

She began writing for Australian street press magazines in the early 2000s, and currently works full-time as a freelance music journalist and content/curation specialist.

Boo Lean[US]

Boo Lean (Lauren Goshinski), is an audio-visual curator and DJ behind some key underground platforms in North America. As a curator for New Forms Festival, co-founder of the VIA Festival, and resident DJ/booker at Hot Mass, she’s been recognized as one of the "top 50 women making noise" both on and off the stage.

Kat Young[UK/DE]

Kat has worked in music for over 10 years. She moved to Berlin in 2012, and following a short stop at Resident Advisor, started working at SoundCloud later that year, where she held various roles until summer 2017. She is now a freelance Product Management Consultant and is the founder of Salt + Sass, a non profit that supports women in the music industry.

Elissa Stolman[US/DE]

After jumping on tour vans to do interviews with local Bay Area bands in high school, Elissa started her first official gig in music writing — an internship at College Music Journal — in 2011. Since then she has worked, freelanced and/or interned at Fader, XLR8R, Spin, Billboard, VICE and Red Bull Music Academy. She is currently the Deputy Editor at Telekom Electronic Beats and a DJ and presenter on Cashmere Radio in Berlin.
