Tirzah
[UK]
Essex-born, London-based Tirzah released her debut album, Devotion, on Domino in 2018. Produced by Mica Levi, Devotion is a compelling venture through vulnerable lyricism, understated production, and R&B-tinged vocal vignettes.
Tirzah first met longtime collaborator and friend Mica Levi at Watford’s renowned Purcell School for Young Musicians. One of their first songs, “Go Now”, has been reworked for the LP, and showcases Tirzah’s soul, R&B, and gospel influences. Recorded across shared houses and studios of their South London friends, Devotion renders mutual care and love audible. Levi’s eccentric, sparse approach to production complements Tirzah’s blunt lyrics and warbling vocal delivery. “Frighteningly intimate, lived-in as an unmade bed, Devotion proffers 11 prayers to the thousand tiny betrayals and unpredictable rituals of modern love.” (The Guardian)
Though her musical history is undoubtedly winding, Tirzah first emerged into a vibrant post- grime and garage UK music scene. Levi and Tirzah’s output includes the 2013 EP I’m Not Dancing, a collection of pop-tinted, soulful tunes, and 2014’s No Romance, which comprised warm, lo-fi vocal ventures. Both were released on Greco-Roman, a label run by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard.
Tirzah has provided guest vocals for the likes of SBTRKT, Baauer, and Tricky. She has appeared at events such as The Hague’s Rewire festival, London’s renowned Hyperdub night Ø, and Croatia’s expansive festival Dimensions. Her CTM 2019 appearance will be her Berlin debut.
