"Still"
VR installation, 2017–2018
Still is an installation and virtual environment that explore the tacit rules informing our behaviour and their repercussion on virtual representations. One person is invited to watch a virtual character whose endlessly repeated movements in a room, are intended for another type of character. By exploiting the way virtual reality rests on perceptual illusions, Still probes the symbolic dimension of our social communication and rituals.
Jessica Ekomane's practice unfolds around music and sound art. She creates situations where the sound acts as a transformative element for the space and the audience. Her work often look at ambiguous images and human narratives within technological development, thereby questioning the neutrality of the rational reasoning pervading scientific advancements. With her most recent installation work, she explores the potential of virtual reality to investigate questions of social conformity.
