SØS Gunver Ryberg
[DK]
SØS Gunver Ryberg is a composer, sound artist, acoustics fanatic and theatre enthusiast from Copenhagen. She gained much deserved attention after playing a number of events, including a Boiler Room night curated by Objekt, Sample & Hold at [ipsə], Berlin Atonal, and Norberg festival in Sweden. Her music flaunts hypnotic, immersive currents of structured chaos.
Her resume is impressive and diverse: she earned a degree from The Danish National Academy Of Music in Denmark (SDMK) and worked as a composer and sound designer at Playdead, an independent game developer in Copenhagen. She has also been involved in numerous art and theatre commissions. As an avid traveller she has visited places as remote as Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago just a few hundred kilometres from the North Pole.
Ryberg is known for pushing herself and taking on challenges, and this tendency was also exhibited when she decided to try out Kyma (one of the toughest hardware/software systems to master) unrehearsed at her debut gig at Tresor. That was a little more than a year ago; now she plays at Kyma conferences and has increasingly incorporated Kyma in her live shows.
“There's not an aggressive bone in Ryberg's body, but her music is some of the most powerful stuff out there. So far there's been just one release under her own name, AFTRYK, on Contort Records, a heady concoction of field recordings, fiery rhythms and immersive timbres. It's instantly arresting and bursting with savage yet carefully controlled energy. It's music that's best experienced live” (residentadvisor.net). Expect an unforgettable performance; Ryberg says the openness and receptiveness of Berlin has encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.
