Lawrence English
[AU]
An artist, curator, and founder of leading avant-garde imprint Room40 based in Brisbane, Lawrence English is one of the most prolific and recognizable figures in contemporary ambient and experimental music. His work undertakes study of perception, memory, and sonic affect across a wide swathe of creative forms.
As a producer and skilled field recorder, English has amassed an expansive discography that includes collaborations with artists like Tujiko Noriko, John Chantler, and Ben Frost and has seen release via outlets like Touch Music, Winds Measure, and Digitalis. As in his most recent outing—the long-form, layered drone work Wilderness of Mirrors, released midway through 2014 by Room40 and based on Cold War misinformation campaigns—his material makes for provocational listening experiences, breaching new territories in sound density and volume.
English is also a highly regarded curator, whose sound and media programmes include MONO, Fabrique, Syncretism, and NineHoursNorth. He has worked as a sound designer for light and video installations, and his commissioned works include film scores and compositions for contemporary dance ensembles. He has also presented radiophonic works for ABC, Deutschlandradio, ORF, and the BBC World Service, and his writing has been published by The Wire, Paris Transatlantic, and Cyclic Defrost.
