Berlin Current

Adventurous Sound from Berlin

Berlin Current is a collaborative initiative from CTM Festival, Berghain, Boiler Room Berlin, De:Bug, and BLN.FM, presenting and premiering new and adventurous configurations of pop music from young Berlin-based artists.

Berlin Current artists have already performed as part of the Polymorphism and n ≠ e (not equal) concert series and Boiler Room Berlin, and the 15th edition of CTM will see a number of performances by Berlin Current artists throughout the festival.

Previously-announced Berlin Current artists to be featured at CTM 2014 include the disorienting cross-genre dance music of Lotic, industrial-inspired alchemistic duo OAKE, and the syncopated rhythms, dark atmospherics, and copious sub-bass of Phoebe Kiddo's sophisticated take on pop.

This year's festival also welcomes other young Berlin talent, including Downwards artist Samuel Kerridge, new PAN label signee M.E.S.H., Mary Ocher, Sylwia, Hyperaktivist, Felix K, Recondite, Opal Tapes' Lumisokea, and Dasha Rush.

In accordance with CTM 2014’s festival theme Dis Continuity, the Berlin Current initiative also extended an Open Call for Works, awarding two commissions for the creation of works by Berlin based artists that channel the experimental and innovative energy of past music pioneers, proposing sound that defies mainstream musical conventions and breaks new creative ground. The selected projects will debut at CTM 2014.

Owen Roberts, a Music Composition graduate from the University of Oxford, aims to extend the groundbreaking musical language of Edgard Varèse’s 1922/23 ""Hyperprism": a piece that envisioned electronic music before such a medium even existed, and that has influenced numerous electronic musicians ever since. "Recycled Hyperprism Plastik for Amplified Chamber Ensemble" comprises an eight-piece ensemble, aiming to create a relevant form of physical, instrumental techno, thereby opening a dialogue between modern electronic music and its Western musical influences.

Kathy Alberici is a multi-instrumentalist and performer best known for her role in psychedelic doom group, Drum Eyes. In conjunction with Martha Jurksaitis, an analogue film artist working under the alias Cherry Kino, Alberici proposes to create a "Sonic Portrait of the Funkhaus Nalepastraße", using mixed-media methods that capture the current sonic and historical environments of the former DDR National Broadcasting Corporation, itself a nucleus that condenses Berlin music history.

Berlin Current is made possible by support from the Musicboard Berlin.
