Marije Baalman

[NL]

Marije Baalman is an artist and researcher/developer working in the field of interactive sound art. Her work explores the sonic output of realtime interactions among performers and/or audiences.

Baalman’s process-based compositions apply the techniques and technologies of physical computing (performance interfaces and/or installations), livecoding, digital and analogue sound processing, and improvisation to explore human behaviours and modes of interpersonal interaction.

Baalman earned a degree in Applied Physics through the department of Acoustics at the Technical University in Delft and completed her Ph.D. on Wave Field Synthesis and electroacoustic music in 2007 at the Electronic Studio of the Technical University of Berlin. She also worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Concordia University in Montreal, researching wireless sensing networks in the context of live performance and installations. She was a contributor to The SuperCollider Book (MIT Press, 2011).

Marije has performed and exhibited work across Europe and internationally (including STEIM, WORM, EXIT festival, club transmediale, Make Art, Electrofringe, Translife, and Elektra) and has collaborated with a number of artists and collectives, including Alberto de Campo, Chris Salter, Michael Schumacher, Attakkalari Dance Company, and Workspace Unlimited.
