Grumbling Fur
[UK]
Grumbling Fur create psychedelic, psychotropic avant-pop that references the subterranean explorations of past British experimentalists such as Coil.
Members Daniel O’Sullivan and Alexander Tucker are veterans of the UK experimental underground: O’Sullivan as a member of Guapo, Norwegian black metal group Ulver, and Aethenor with Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley, and Tucker with imbogodom and as a solo artist. The duo describes their most recent album, Glynnaestra (Thrill Jockey Records, 2013), as a collage, produced using an eclectic array of instruments, both acoustic and modified, and vocal harmonies and yielding modern, shamanistic meta-narratives. Writer for The Quietus Rory Gibb described the album as conjuring up “a wonderfully evocative and distinctly British kitchen sink psychedelia, an intimate shared space where the whistle of a kettle and the clatter of pots and pans can sit seamlessly alongside heavily reverbed 80s pop synths, expansive rural landscapes, delectably ludicrous choruses and invocations to imaginary deities.”
Grumbling Fur’s debut album Furrier (Aurora Borealis, 2011) emerged out of a one-day recording session with Jussi Lehtisalo of Circle and Pharaoh Overlord and Dave Smith of Guapo as a suite of psychedelic mantras. Similarly, 2012’s Alice was recorded live in the studio for Southern Records’ Latitudes series, inspired by “a psychoactive houseplant and the rabbit hole therein.”
