Claus Löser

Claus Löser was born 1962 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz). He is a baccalaureate and has completed military service. Since 1980, he has worked on lyrics, music, and films.

From 1990 to 1995 he studied film in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Since 1990, he has served as the program director of the Brotfabrik cinema in Berlin. Since 1992, he has also worked as a film critic (taz, Berliner Zeitung, film-dienst) and writer. In 1996, he founded the collection “ex.oriente.lux – experimental archive East 1976 – 1989” and published the book Gegenbilder – Filmischer Subversion in der DDR (Counter Images). He works as a filmmaker, critic, curator, and lecturer in Berlin specializing in experimental and underground cinema and on film culture under totalitarian circumstances. For the Berlinale 2009, he curated the special program “Winter adé” with fifteen films from the former Eastern Block. In 2009, together with Jakobine Motz, he filmed the documentary Claiming the Space, about independent art exhibitions in the GDR. In 2011 he finished a dissertation on East German underground films, also published as book (Strategien der Verweigerung / “Strategies of Refusal”).
